It was established as an adjunct to health care. WIC helps families by providing checks for healthy supplemental foods, individual counseling, group nutrition and health education, breastfeeding support and referrals to healthcare and other community services. WIC is funded by Congress and administered by the US Department of Agriculture and the California Department of Public Health. In 1974, when a study of infant mortality in Mississippi showed that poor women and children were malnourished, the WIC program was created and has enjoyed bipartisan support ever since. |

WIC is the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Supplemental Nutrition Program which serves low income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women and children under age five who have a nutritional need. WIC is a federally funded program and is administered by the California Department of Health Services. WIC services are available to anyone who lives in California and meets the program guidelines regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability or immigration status. Women are encouraged to enroll into WIC as soon as they learn they are pregnant. The WHCC Huntington Park WIC office is located on the 2nd floor of the Crown Medical building in the heart of Huntington Park. It is conveniently located within walking distance of various bus lines and several authorized WIC stores.
