Danbury Wic Program Location: Danbury, CT - 06810 Contact Phone: (203) 797-4638 Details: WIC is effective in improving the health of pregnant women, new mothers, and their infants. A 1990 study showed that women who participated in the program during their pregnancies had lower Medicaid costs for themselves and their babies than did women who did not participate. WIC participation was also linked with longer gestation periods, higher birthweights and lower infant mortality. Federal & State grant funds provide supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. The Danbury WIC Program is committed to improving the health of eligible pregnant women, infants, and children by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding support, healthy foods, and referrals to health and social programs during the critical stages of fetal and early childhood development. We do that by giving our most vulnerable children the best possible start by providing optimal nutrition during the critical stages of fetal and early childhood development phases. |

Stamford Wic Program Location: Stamford, CT - 06901 Contact Phone: (203) 977-4385 Details: The Stamford Women, Infant and Children's program is a federally funded program which provides service through the Stamford health department. The program provides healthy food supplements and nutrition information-during critical times of growth and development. Eligibility is based on income and nutritional need. Benefits are available for pregnant, breastfeeding or women who recently had a baby. Infants and children under the age of five years old are also eligible for benefits. Please contact us for eligibility information. W.I.C. checks are issued to provide foods which include the 5 food groups. The W.I.C. foods emphasize good choices of nutrients which promote growth and development; iron, calcium, vitamin A & C., proteins and more. The W.I.C. checks are redeemable at most major grocery stores and several pharmacies in the area. Information on breastfeeding and healthy eating is provided. If necessary, referrals are made to other programs. |

Norwalk Health Department Wic Program Location: Norwalk, CT - 06851 Contact Phone: (203) 854-7885 Details: WIC is a Federally funded supplemental nutrition program available to low-income pregnant and postpartum women, as well as infants and children up to 5 years old. WIC provides nutrition education and counseling, breast feeding promotion and support, nutritious foods, and help in accessing community resources to clients enrolled in the program. The food packages provided by WIC align with the 2010 USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans by increasing fiber through whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and by reducing the saturated fat and cholesterol intake for women and children over the age of 2 years. WIC is also an advocate for the promotion and support of long-term breastfeeding and delaying the introduction of semi-solid foods until 6 months of age in accordance with the feeding practice guidelines of The American Academy of Pediatrics. |
